A new track for off-road cyclists and bushwalkers that recently opened on Mt Wellington, near Hobart in Tasmania, is being hailed as world-class by mountain bikers.
Stage one of the North–South Track (pictured left) was constructed with the help of internationally renowned MTB-course designer Glen Jacobs. Local riders were also heavily involved in the layout and construction of the trail, which boasts technical features including switchbacks, rock armouring, log rides and drop-offs.
Designed in accordance with guidelines laid out by the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA), the North–South Track incorporates a range of options to meet the needs of all off-road cyclists.
The spectacular main trail provides a challenging ride for experienced cross-country riders, while optional technical features – such as jumps and log rides – have been included in the design to test the skills and nerve of even the most capable and adventurous mountain bikers.
Glen Jacobs has been involved in the concept and layout of competitive recreational trails in 19 countries and is considered one of the world’s top designers, but even he was impressed with the work put into the project by Hobart City Council and the Wellington Park Management Trust.
“This is an amazing piece of hand-built engineering of unequalled workmanship,” Jacobs enthused. “The wonderful stonework, the style of the course, specially designed access through a boulder field and stunning views…riders from all over the world will be attracted to this magnificent and challenging track.”
Alderman Rob Valentine, Lord Mayor of Hobart, said the track had been built in response to a growth in mountain biking on the mountain and because of a need to provide designated tracks for bike riders to avoid conflicts with bushwalkers.
