A new elite adventure racing team has been established with the aim of increasing awareness and support of women infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Australia and worldwide.
The team, Peak Adventure, includes multisport specialist Jarad Kohlar and Deanna Blegg (pictured above), Australia’s current female adventure racing champion, who is also HIV positive.
In 1996, Deanna, a former triathlete and mother of two children, was given six months to live due to an AIDS defining illness. Through strength of mind, diet and an incredible fitness ethic she defied the odds, and a decade later made a comeback at the Anaconda Adventure Race in Lorne. Today, she is one of Australia’s top-ranked female adventure racers.
The team has recently competed in expedition-length adventure races in Ireland and France, and is now back on Australian soil preparing for the 2008 Anaconda Adventure Race series, the Max Adventure 24-Hour race, the Freycinet Lodge Challenge and the 2009 Coast-to-Coast in New Zealand.
